James Parkin began life as
a Barman fed up with the same old same old sounds being spouted out
in the bar he worked in. After saving for a bit, and asking the manager,
he purchased a set of CD decks and began to practice at home. His first
break came when the bosses asked him to do a Thursday night trial,
it was so popular he was quickly moved on to the Friday night slot,
and before long, the other DJ was asked to leave, and he was able to
take on the whole weekend.
His residency here lasted for 3 years, and the musical range went through
a drastic overhaul. From being forced to play a combination of R&B,
Pop Commercial Music and the obligatory cheese, a new housier sound
started to creep in to the sets, brining a new wave of customers for
the bar. One off nights soon became the norm, and with it, the travelling
from bar to bar in the area for special nights/covering slots.
It soon became apparent that in order to go further with his career,
he would have to start thinking outside of the "Near Area" box,
and a plan to move to London was hatched. He work continued to come
in, but was still in the old box, so travelling became longer and further.
Then one night, whilst browsing on a house music forum, a post from
a man called Johnny H caught his eye, and he was drawn to a radio station
called Dance FM. Within 2 weeks James was playing on his own show on
the site, and things were starting to grow. Within 2 months he
now had 3 shows a week 1 on dance fm, 1 on sunrise and 1 on scratch
n spin. Work outside was picking up too.
James then joined forces with south coast promoter Carl Hanaghan, and
Strawberry Lemonade was born, this night is set to run and run and
spread its way around. And a collaboration was also made with Slaves
2 Soul on a Soul Intention adventure.
James has since seen his DJing career pick up speed very quickly, forming
collaborations with Soulfriendly, and playing on nights for other promotions
such as Soulfunk Digital and Down Time. Teaming up with Jamie T and
Keith Ribbons on the Soulfriendly prject has seen him come in on an
already hugely successful promotion. With the forthcoming launch of
a joint venture with Tony Scully, soul-satellite.com an internet based
radio station is set to take the big boys on in a short matter of time
